When to seek urgent medical help

Call 999 or go to A&E if back or leg pain comes with new numbness around your bottom or genitals, difficulty passing urine, loss of bladder or bowel control, or severe or worsening weakness in both legs.

A painful, swollen calf with chest pain or breathlessness also needs emergency help.

For a hot, swollen joint with fever, a serious injury or sudden inability to bear weight, seek urgent advice from NHS 111.
